According to historical documents and archaeological studies, General José de San Martín lived in this house between 1814 and 1817 with his wife, Remedios de Escalada. Their daughter, Mercedes, was born here in 1816, and it was from this residence that the great emancipation campaign of the Army of the Andes was launched.
