The main and oldest park in the City of Mendoza. In 1896, French landscaper Carlos Thays was entrusted with designing a project that fused English Romanticism and French Classicism. The park spans more than 329 hectares and contains over 300 species from around the world.
This park has evolved since its creation, always striving to preserve its original style, with wide paths that invite visitors to explore. Within the park, there are several points of interest worth highlighting:
The gates of the park: The main entrance, and the most attractive for tourists. The gates were purchased in France in 1907. The Andean condor, along with the Mendoza shields, are the most prominent features of the monument.
Little Horses of Marly: In 1914, a pair of marble horse sculptures, made by the French firm Sahores and Ojeda from Paris, were added.
Fountain of the Continents: Added in 1914, this fountain is a work of great artistic beauty, designed by Val d'Osné in France. It represents the four continents: America, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
The Lake: Built as the heart of the park, it serves as a water reserve and a venue for water sports. One of the first structures built on the lake was the Club Regatas, which remains the main visible structure.
El Rosedal: Built on one of the lake's banks, offering a new cultural and recreational space. In the past, visitors could board a boat to tour the lake.
Museum of Natural Sciences: Located within the park, offering educational insights into the natural world.
Lake Circuit: A recreational and sports circuit that can be completed via the streets surrounding the lake. Visitors can also access the island in the lake as part of the route.
Lake Island: A small island featuring sculptures and benches where you can relax and enjoy views of the lake.
The construction and planning of the park began in 1896, originally named Parque del Oeste. Its foundation was based on studies conducted by hygienist Dr. Emilio Coni, whose analysis of Mendoza’s sanitary conditions led to a series of recommended actions to improve public health. One of these actions was the creation of a park to help purify the atmosphere of the area. In 1947, the park was renamed Parque General San Martín.
