Reserva Laguna del Diamante

Diamond Lagoon

The Laguna del Diamante Natural Reserve, alongside the majestic Maipo Volcano, stands as one of the most remarkable attractions in the Uco Valley and Mendoza Province. This natural wonder boasts some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country. It’s worth noting that access is only available during the summer months.

The Laguna del Diamante Natural Reserve is located at approximately 3300 meters above sea level, deep within the Andes mountain range, near the border with Chile. The journey to the lagoon begins 20 km from the town of Pareditas via Route 40, followed by a winding mountain road best traveled in a 4x4 vehicle.

Before setting out, it’s essential to check the weather, road conditions, and the entry fees required for the reserve.

The route to the lagoon offers breathtaking landscapes and the opportunity to spot local wildlife. Key points of interest along the way include:

  • Park Rangers: Located 25 km from Route 40, this is a mandatory stop for information and control.
  • Cruz de Piedra Shelter: A historical national gendarmerie refuge.
  • Vegas del Yaucha: Lush green areas near mountain streams, ideal for spotting wildlife, especially guanacos.
  • El Cilindro Shelter: An old park ranger shelter marking the entrance to the lagoon.
  • Laguna del Diamante: Fed by glacial meltwater and streams, the lagoon gets its name from the reflection of Maipo Volcano on calm days, resembling a diamond.
  • Maipo Volcano: An active stratovolcano, currently dormant, standing at 5323 meters above sea level on the Chilean border.
