This excursion takes you to the site of the Andes plane crash and invites you to reflect on the harrowing experience of the survivors. The vast, unique, and breathtaking landscapes of this region allow you to appreciate the Andes mountain range in an entirely new way.
The wreckage of the plane is located in the valley known as 'Las Lágrimas,' near the town of El Sosneado in San Rafael. Excursions typically take place during the spring or summer and last around 3 days. Participants can choose between hiking or horseback riding.
It is essential to go with experienced guides who know the area and the mountains well, as there are river crossings that can be dangerous, and the path is not always well-marked. Additionally, you will need to obtain a pass to enter the area, which is usually purchased in the town of El Sosneado.
The journey begins by driving to the vicinity of the old hotel near El Sosneado, where parking is available along the route. On the first day, you'll cross the Atuel River and several streams before arriving at the 'El Barroso' campsite.
On the second day, you'll proceed to the crash site before returning to the campsite.
The scenery along the entire route is spectacular, featuring rivers, streams, mountains, sinkholes, and lagoons. The area's wildlife is equally remarkable.
This experience fosters a deep sense of reflection on the ordeal endured by the survivors of the 1972 plane crash. For 72 days, they managed to stay alive despite having no mountain experience, no equipment, little food, and while injured. It is often regarded as a miracle of survival.
